Track 16 Gallery is pleased to announce THE CUBAN
POSTER: A RETROSPECTIVE, an exhibition that promises to be one of the most
comprehensive collections of Cuban poster art shown in the United States.
Three outstanding graphics archives--the Center for Cuban Studies (New
York), the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (Los Angeles), and
Global Graphics (Los Angeles)--have culled their collections for this
unprecedented exhibition. Included will be works by Pedro Arate, Munoz
Bachs, Rene Mederos, Niko, Alfredo Rostgaard, as well as work by a group of
less well-known visual artists including Eduardo Marin, Marzel, and Pepe
Menendez. The opening reception will take place on July 10 from 6 to 8 P.M.,
with live music by Francisco Aguabella and his Afro-Cuban band. Regular
gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 to 6 P.M.
This retrospective, includes posters spanning six decades, traces the
development
of a culturally rich nation where graphics are used to promote and celebrate
its history and ideals. A variety of rare and new posters will be available
for purchase at the gallery as part of this special event.
In-gallery seminars and screenings of new Cuban cinema are slated for
selected dates (Track 16 Nights) during the exhibition. Planned events
include two panel discussions organized by Al Nodal: WORKING CUBA, a
discussion with five people currently working with Cuba on diverse projects;
and READING CUBA, a panel of authors examining issues, attitudes, and laws
in Cuba and the U.S. today. Additional events include HEARING CUBA, a
special preview screening of a film about the Cuban musical group, Los
Zafiros, followed by a question-and-answer session with the director; and
SEEING CUBA, an evening of new and vintage Cuban cinema. Events take place
on Friday nights during the run of the exhibition. Please refer to
