JULY 17 - AUGUST 28, 1999The metropolitan area of Guadalajara, one of the most important industrial and manufacturing centers in Mexico, is still home to a tradition of fine crafts production-particularly in the towns of Tlaquepaque and Tonala-districts that form one solid urban structure. Workshops represented in the exhibition are Arena México: Arte Contemporáneo and Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos, directed by Jaime Ashida Cueto, and Taller de Cerámica Contemporáneo Suro directed by Jose Noe Suro Talleres is a collaborative mixed-media project that brings together an international array of contemporary artists and the Taller de Cerámica (Ceramic Workshop) and the Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos (Mexican Tapestry Workshop). The goal of the workshops is to revitalize traditional crafts through the energy of contemporary art and artists. The artists who are a part of the exhibition have executed projects in such materials as acrylic, clay, fiberglass, lead, plastic, wood, and fiber in collaboration with artisans versed in traditional, as well as contemporary materials.
